Thief Tortured and Killed, Allegedly by Young Kolkata Doctors

A 30-year-old man was beaten with bamboo sticks and slashed at the boys' hostel of the premier medical college.

Kolkata: A mob of doctors and medical students allegedly killed a suspected thief at a medical college hostel in Kolkata by tying him up, thrashing him and then slashing his penis with a razor, in what the police are describing as a case of vigilante justice.

Authorities have ordered an inquiry into the attack in which the 30-year-old man was beaten with bamboo sticks and slashed on Sunday at the boys' hostel of the premier NRS Medical College, a senior police officer said.

"Preliminary inquiries have revealed that nearly a dozen junior doctors picked up the man on suspicion of stealing mobile phones," Kolkata's deputy police commissioner Dhrubajyoti De said.

The mob allegedly caught the man while he was sneaking around Room 99 of the hostel. They allegedly dragged him into a room and thrashed him, then tied him to a pillar outside the room and carried out the attack, before leaving him to die.

"Some of them even slashed him on his private parts," De told news agency AFP, adding that labourers working nearby alerted police to the attack. Two people have been detained for questioning but no arrests have been made.

State deputy health minister Chandrima Bhattacharya ordered an inquiry, describing the incident as "very shocking".

Students who NDTV spoke to today said they were not present at the hostel over the weekend. Among them, Avik Mirdha, in whose room the alleged thief was caught.

"On Saturday night I went home after duty," Mr Mirdha sasid to NDTV.  "My next duty was on Sunday evening. So Saturday to Sunday evening I was at home. I know only what I read in the papers or heard on TV".
