Howarah: In West Bengal, several vehicles, belonging to a Trinamool Congress (TMC) worker in Howrah, were set ablaze by a rival gang today as fallout of a gang-war on 6th April.
11 days ago, gangs loyal to TMC councillor Vinay Singh and rival Pradip Tewari had fought a gun battle at the Shalimar railway yard over freight unloading contracts. Mr Singh's brother and nephew had suffered bullet injuries.
Early this morning, Mr Singh's brother, Vinod, died in the hospital. Soon after, Mr Singh's supporters barged into Mr Tewari's office premises near the Shalimar rail yard and set fire to several trucks and a car. Fire engines, police and Rapid Action Force were rushed to spot and the area is tense.
Local shopkeepers have closed shop and are demanding arrest of the culprits of the 6th April clash. They claim not a single arrest was made after the incident of firing that day.
The rivalry between Pradip Tewari and Vinay Singh goes back several years when Vinay Singh won the civic election in Ward 36 of Howrah on a Congress ticket. He later joined the TMC, dislodging the local TMC leader Pradip Tewari. Since then, the two have been at loggerheads- politically, as well as over freight contracts at the rail yard.
