Kolkata:
Sambia Sohrab, the younger son of a Trinamool leader who was arrested for driving the
Audi car that hit and killed an Indian Air Force corporal taking part in a Republic Day practice parade in Kolkata on Wednesday, will be produced in a court today.
Police had arrested Sambia Sohrab, son of Trinamool leader Mohammed Sohrab who was earlier a Rashtriya Janata Dal legislator, late yesterday from Beckbagan area of south Kolkata from near his in-laws house and brought to the police headquarters at Lal Bazar, reports said.
Some sources suggest Sambia surrendered to the police.
Sambia, along with his and older Ambia Sohrab and father had been absconding since January 13 after running over Corporal Abhimanyu Gaud, who was practicing a Republic Day march past on Red Road.
After hitting the corporal, the Audi Q7 had rammed a barricade before coming to a stop.
The driver left the car and ran away. Some reports said the car's number plate was removed before the driver fled.
Footage of the incident showed the officer marching and then vanishing from the screen when a car zipped past.
Earlier in the day, speaking about the incident, Trinamool Congress Parliamentarian Derek O' Brien had denied the Sohrabs were linked to his party.
"It was a reckless demon of a driver. Neither the driver nor his father is related to TMC, law of the land will punish the culprit soon," he had told news agency ANI.
