Visva-Bharati wants to bid again for World Heritage tag

Kolkata: Visva-Bharati University will make a fresh bid to include Rabindranath Tagore's abode Shantiniketan in the UNESCO's list of World Heritage Sites, though such an attempt last year had ended in failure.

"We will make a fresh bid as soon as possible," Visva-Bharati spokesperson Amrit Sen told PTI.

Seeking support for the coveted status, the central university is now in the process of forming a heritage committee which will send its recommendations to the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who is its Chancellor.

"There were some mistakes in our proposal last year. We need to rectify them. The committee will give us suggestions on how to make our bid flawless this time," Mr Sen said.

Located in the Birbhum district, about 150 kilometres away from Kolkata, Shantiniketan was India's official entry last year for UNESCO's list of World Heritage Sites, but failed to make it to the final nominations.

Modelled on the lines of the ancient Gurukul system, an experimental school was set up amidst natural surroundings in 1901 by Tagore.

As the bard's fame reached worldwide with the winning of Nobel Prize for literature in 1913, the school soon bloomed into a full-fledged University.

Declared an institute of national importance, its alumni include Amartya Sen and Satyajit Ray.

University officials said the heritage status would help the institution regain its pride which had been dented following the theft of Tagore's Nobel medallion and student unrest.
