The father of the air force corporal who was run over in Kolkata allegedly by an influential politician's son, has approached the military with a request for help.
Corporal Abhimanyu Goud's father Ranglal Goud reportedly called Air Vice Marshal KPUK Naik on Republic Day. Sources say he shared his worry that Sambia Sohrab, who was arrested two weeks ago and is in police custody till Saturday, may get off lightly.
Mr Goud, who is a carpenter, reportedly also discussed his fear that the case will drag and asked to meet Air Vice Marshal Naik.
21-year-old Corporal Gaud, a drill instructor, was killed while practising for the Republic Day parade on January 13;
Sambia Sohrab was allegedly driving when he hit the corporal with his Audi after violating traffic rules and breaking through barriers. He allegedly abandoned the car and ran away.
Sambia Sohrab's father, former RJD lawmaker Mohammad Sohrab, is seen as close to Bengal's ruling Trinamool Congress.
Sambia was caught three days later and has allegedly confessed.
The Air Force has assured Mr Goud all possible support in getting him justice for his son, the youngest of three brothers. Last week, the Air Force put in a request with the police for a joint investigation, but it is yet to get a response. It had asked the police for a list of witnesses and all proof so that it can complete its Court of Inquiry.
Witnesses named by the police will be required to testify before the military Court of Inquiry.
Sambia's friends Noor Alam or Jonny and Shahnawaz Khan or Shanu, have told the police that Sambia was with them till just before the accident and was driving drunk. They claim that they had an argument with Sambia when he ignored their advice to avoid drink driving.
After the incident, Sambia, his older brother Ambia and their father went missing. Ambia and Mr Sohrab are still missing.
