Amritsar:
A woman was forced to deliver a child in a corridor of a government hospital after the medical staff allegedly refused to move her to a labour room, prompting authorities to order an inquiry.
Gurpreet Kaur (25), a resident of village Guru Ki Waddali - Chehertha, was taken to the civil hospital in an ambulance and the doctor who was accompanying her asked the senior staff of the hospital to shift the patient to the labour room.
However, it is alleged by her family that the hospital staff refused to shift her to the labour room saying that no Class IV employee was present in the hospital and no stretcher was available. Besides, the lift was also out of order for the last six months.
As Kaur developed severe labour pains, the doctor and the driver accompanying her took her to the second floor of the hospital where she delivered the baby outside the labour room of the hospital in full public view.
She was later admitted to the hospital.
Civil Surgeon Avtar Singh Jarewal said the patient has not filed any written complaint against anyone and no action against any of the staff members was proposed.
However, Punjab Health Minister Satpal Gosian said that he would take strict action against the errant staff of the civil hospital, besides ordering a high-level inquiry against the senior health officers in Amritsar.
Slamming Jarewal, Punjab's Minister for Women and Child Welfare Lakshmi Kanta Chawla said that she would take up the matter.
Officiating Deputy Commissioner of Amritsar Satwant Singh Johal expressed anguish over the incident and said a higher level inquiry would be initiated.
