Kolkata: A 28-year-old woman in Kolkata was today finally able to lodge a police complaint of gang rape, seven days after the alleged incident happened on March 9.
A resident of Lake Town, the woman has complained that some local youth had told her to 'visit' them and warned that if she did not, they would morph her pictures and put up obscene photos of her on the internet.
The woman visited one of the youth's home on March 9, where she was given a beer, allegedly laced with drugs. Before she fell unconscious, she remembers being molested. When she awoke, she had no clothes on. One youth was filming her with a handicam. When she tried to snatch and break it, they said, if you tell the police your family will be in danger.
On March 10, the woman went to the Lake Town police station but the police refused to take her complaint. The police allegedly also got the woman's brother to give in writing that she was mentally challenged. The woman had spent several months recently at a hospital for the mentally ill.
The woman went back to the police station twice more, only to be turned away.
Today, however, she was called by the police to the Bidhannagar Police Commissionerate. After speaking to her at length, a complaint of gang rape was filed.
Police also raided her neighbourhood but were unable to arrest anyone. They detained a friend of the youth who was, however, apparently not part of the incident and was allowed to go.
The woman she knew the name of only one of the 4 youth involved in the incident. "I want justice," she said after filing her complaint, "and action against the police who insulted me."
"Investigations are on," said Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police, Debashish Dhar, "and the law will take its own course."
