Kolkata:
A young woman stormed into a posh wedding in Kolkata on Wednesday night and waving a marriage registration certificate, announced that the groom was in fact her husband who had married her in 2010.
After the initial pandemonium, Puja Kaur was then manhandled and relatives of the groom Rajesh Giri tried to push her out of the wedding venue.
But Puja didn't come alone to the wedding venue. The police arrived soon after, on the basis of Puja's complaint and arrested not only the groom but also his father.
According to Puja's complaint, she and Rajesh had got married in 2010 but kept it a secret from their families. However she says, they lived as husband and wife at Rajesh's home in Nainital.
A week or so ago, Puja heard through friends that Rajesh was getting married again. He initially denied it but later admitted he was getting married again due to family pressure.
On Tuesday, Puja went to Rajesh's house and confronted his family but claims she was heckled and thrown out.
Getting the police to act on her complaint wasn't easy for Puja. She had to go to three different police stations to file a complaint. She says all three refused to do so saying until Rajesh got married for the second time, they could do nothing.
Finally Puja went to the police headquarters yesterday and met senior officers who finally directed the Chitpore police station to register a complaint as the groom's family lives at 11 Chitpore Road.
Some social workers who heard of Puja's plight accompanied her to the wedding venue last evening.
As Puja was being pushed out of the venue, the police arrived and arrested Rajesh and his father.
