1. Coorg

Of course, the first mention in our list is this gorgeous coffee region and hill station - Coorg. Known as the land of the Kodavas, Coorg is the perfect getaway to immerse yourself in the lap of nature. Places to see include Nagarhole National Park, Bylakuppe - the Tibetan settlement, and Dubare Elephant Camp, among others.

2. Hampi

A must for history buffs, the UNESCO world heritage site is a popular pick to get a glimpse of the rich history of Vijanagar Empire. Hampi has great significance as it is also said to have been a home of Lord Rama. The Virupaksha Temple is the star attraction, while you can also explore Underground Siva Temple, Royal Enclosures and Queen's Bath. Don't forget to take a boat ride over to the hippie side and enjoy a laidback time.

3. Kabini

Wildlife enthusiasts are sure to love Kabini, where you can switch off and enjoy your time at a luxury resort and go tiger spotting by signing up for safaris.

Food lovers should definitely include Mangalore in their list of places to visit in Karnataka. The beachside city is perfect spot to indulge in local Mangalorean food with the likes of Kori Gassi, Chicken Ghee Roast, Mangalore Buns, Neer Dosa and out-of-the-world seafood.

5. Marwante

Further up from Mangalore city is the picturesque village of Marwante, which lies by the coastal line. Marwante not only makes for a perfect beach holiday with a white sand beach to make the most of, but you can also sign up for snorkeling and deep sea diving to max your dose of vitamin 'sea'.

6. Gokarna

Commonly known as poor man's Goa, Gokarna may lack the glitz and glamour but it makes up by offering you four stunning beaches (Om, Paradise, Kudle and Half Moon) where you can swim or laze around. It's also a religious hub, and you can explore the town's famous Shiva temple.

7. Dandeli

Need some thrill in your life? Then head to Dandeli and sign up for white water rafting in Kali river for a memorable experience with friends. Other than that, you can explore Dandeli Wildlife Sanctuary and Kavala Caves, and spend time trekking, coracle riding, etc.

8. Chikmagalur

Another coffee region in Karnataka, Chikmagalur is just about 250 km away from Bengaluru, and as such it makes for a perfect weekend getaway to enjoy a luxurious stay at a coffee estate and soak in the greenery around. You can head for treks to explore the region or indulge in lip-smacking local food, particularly the pork dishes.

9. Belur

The temple town of Belur is a must-visit if you fancy ancient architecture. Belur is renowned for the grand Chennakesava Temple Complex, built by King Vishnuvardhana of Hoysala Dynasty in 1117 AD. The intricate stone carvings and sculptures are sure to mesmerise you, as well as the six feet tall idol of Lord Vishnu in the temple. Other places to visit here include Lakshmi Devi Temple and Sri Veera Narayana Temple.

10. Shimoga

One of the top reasons that make Shimoga a popular tourist destination is the majestic Jog Falls, said to be the second largest waterfall in India. Other than that, it's the greenery around that makes this town situated near Shravathi river a favourite pick, where you can try river rafting, kayaking, canoeing, etc.

11. Bandipur

For wildlife lovers, Bandipur is a popular pick because it makes for a great drive from Bengaluru and Mysore, is not too far away and it offers amazing stay options - from jungle lodges to tree houses - that you can really have the best time in the wild. If you are lucky, you can spot tiger, bison, wild elephants, deer and other wild beasts.

12. Mysore

Of course, last but not the least, no list is complete without the mention of Mysore. Although it's a city, Mysore is worth your time because of its rich royal heritage and the spectacular food on offer.
