Travel really has a way of opening one's mind. If it's away from Delhi, then perhaps one's lungs too. Unfortunately, the historical capital city of India is far from being pollution free. Pollution or no pollution, getting out of the city after a hectic week at work is something we all need every once in a while. The city life and the madness that surrounds it really can get to a person. So we've put together a few places that'll help you take your mind off all the hectic hullabaloo that comes with living in a city like Delhi.

Although just a few hours' drive away from Delhi, these places will make you feel like you've been transported into a different world. The clean air and the serene atmosphere ensures that your weekend is a relaxing one. While you might spend some time on the road, the final destination will make the long drive or travel time, well worth it.

We would suggest leaving early in the a.m. to reach these places on a weekend, so as to maximise your time there.

1. Naukuchiatal

Close to the popular hill station of Nainital, Naukuchiatal is close enough to some action-packed activities and cute cafes, and far enough from the maddening crowds that rush to hill stations for some respite. The 'tal' or lake of Naukuchiatal will provide enough opportunities for some weekend activity in the form of kayaking or boating - and the surrounding areas serve well for people just looking to trek or soak in some nature.

The easiest way to get here from Delhi would be by taking a train to Kathgodam. Naukuchiatal is then 1 hour 30 minutes by car. The journey by train and then a car drive up takes approximately 7 hours. One can also drive there. The car drive all the way from Delhi takes approximately 8 hours and 30 minutes - but beware of broken roads.

2. Kasauli

Kasauli is perhaps the closest hill station from Delhi, offering the things that it does. Peaceful and green, Kasauli is a great place to sneak away to for the weekend. Kasauli isn't an action packed destination, but it is the perfect haven for someone looking to just have a relaxing weekend away from the hustle-bustle of the city. Read a book, Netflix and chill and refresh. You'll be geared up for the week's madness by the time you're back.

The easiest way to get to Kasauli would be by taking a train to Kalka. The train takes approximately 4 hours and then the drive ahead from Kalka to Kasauli takes approximately 1 hour 30 minutes. Driving is also an option - the roads from Delhi to Kasauli are well paved and functional. The drive will take you approximately the same amount of time as the train.

3. Rishikesh

Rishikesh is a destination that offers many things to do. There's adventure sport, there's yoga for those looking to unwind and there are also some beautiful temples to visit. Whether you're looking for an adrenaline rush or just looking to soak in some culture, Rishikesh will not disappoint you.

A drive from Delhi to Rishikesh takes a mere 6 hours, if not less, The roads are in good condition. One can also take a flight to Dehradun and then drive ahead to Rishikesh. The flight from Delhi to Dehradun takes approximately 50 minutes. The drive ahead to Rishikesh takes an additional 1 hour 30 minutes.
