Getting a pet is a huge responsibility. It may all seem fun and games and fetch the ball, but it is so much more than that. Of course, there are therapeutic benefits to getting a pet home, what with the feel good, and the unconditional love your pet gives you. But apart from that, taking care of another being is a responsibility that a lot of people can’t take up. Especially a working person who stays alone and isn’t home a lot.
But even then, if your love for animals is too much and you really want to get a pet who you can play with and who can be a constant companion for you, here are a few questions you need to be asking yourself before you decide to get one.
How much time can you dedicate to your pet?
Pets require daily interaction, love and care. And even if dogs need more of all that than cats, the general statement is true for all pets unless you want to face behavioural issues with your pet. They also require a great deal of activity such as walking, playing, training etc. So if you are one to stay out late or come home and still be busy, a pet might not be for you.
Do you have the finances for a pet?
Like I said, not all fun and games. Vet appointments, vaccinations, special food, they all come along with a pet and need to be catered to diligently. So unless you are ready to invest the money into all that or can’t afford to within your current salary, don’t get a pet.
Do you have back up?
In case you can’t make it home back in time, or are travelling for work, do you have someone who you can rely on to take care of the pet, maybe other family members? In which case you need to check with them as well, about how comfortable they are with the idea of a pet before you get one.
