Backwater boat rides are a must

One of the many cities that deserve a visit when you are down south is Alappuzha, also known as Alleppey, in Kerala. The Venetian Capital of Kerala, the city is known mostly for its backwaters, lagoons , and beaches. Beyond the paddy fields, the picturesque roads and streets, the houseboats that offer a luxurious stay for those who care to explore them, there are a few things that you just can’t miss doing when you are in Alappuzha. Here are three of those things.

Take a boat ride through the backwaters

Nothing brings out the beauty of Alappuzha the way a ride through its backwaters does. Not just coconut tree lined shores but you also pass through slower laden riverbeds and groves; you can only stare at the beautifully green and blue sights that cross you, or you can relax in the boat, as the sun filters through the leaves. Eat the local food

When you take a backwater boat ride, chances are you will be served breakfast and lunch at the boatman’s cottage, cooked by his wife. This is an experience in itself - not only you are eating with the locals, sharing stories with them, but you also get a taste of the local food. Even on the streets of Alappuzha you get served local delicacies which you shouldn’t miss.

Go to the beach


If Alappuzha beach is one of the finer beaches in Kerala - not only is it clean but also one that you can sit and relax by. There is also Marari Beach that is a little away from Alappuzha.
