How to give French fries a health-friendly upgrade

5 Healthy Alternatives To Eat Instead Of French Fries
Replace french fries with these healthier choices

Whether you order a sandwich for lunch or a beer with dinner, for many a side of French fries is a mandatory. As tasty as they are, French fries are generally high in oil, salt and starch which doesn't make them the healthiest option around. In moderation, sure but if you end up grabbing a serving of potato fries too often, it's time to think again. What you can do is give these 5 healthy alternatives a try instead of French fries the next time you get a craving.

1. Apple Chips

Think of them as the naturally sweet version of French fries. Thinly slice a few apples without the cores, sprinkle with cinnamon and a pinch of brown sugar, then bake on high heat until they crinkle and brown. Delicious and sweeter too.

2. Pita Chips

If you don't want to go through the hassle of making your own dish, grab a bag of multigrain pita chips instead. Usually baked, low in preservatives and made of multiple grains, they are perfect to munch on.

3. Zucchini Fries

A particularly healthy way to go is with zucchini. The vegetable has a neutral flavour which makes it perfect to pair it with a dip. To make it, peel and chop your zucchini into narrow strips. Wipe with a cloth, dip into a mixture of one beaten egg and roll in breadcrumbs. Bake until they are golden brown on both sides.

4. Kale Chips

You can replace both your French fries and potato chips with this extremely healthy alternative that comes from the leafy vegetable. You can simply purchase a packet of kale chips or even make them at home by seasoning fresh kale leaves with salt and pepper and then baking until crisp.

5. Baked Potato Fries

If nothing can replace potato based fries for you, then make them healthier by baking them. Peel and cut your potato into narrow strips. Wipe with a cloth, place in baking tray and drizzle with olive oil, paprika and a pinch of salt. Bake until are crisp and brown.
