The sight of white flakes of dandruff on anyone's shoulder will instantly have them rushing for a quick fix to get rid of it. Most of the time, the methods also strip the hair's natural sebum and do more bad than good. So why not take a peek in the kitchen cabinet? There lie a few ingredients that are always on hand, completely natural and warriors in the battle against dandruff.

Lemon

When life gives you lemons, make a lemon hair mask that will bid dandruff goodbye. Thanks to the citric acid in lemon, it clarifies the follicle to remove the flakes on the scalp for good.

Warm up 3 tablespoons of almond oil and mix in the juice of one lemon when cool. Massage it into the scalp, let it sit for an hour and then wash off with warm water. Repeat this treatment twice a week until your dandruff has disappeared.

Neem

Nani's most trusted ingredient, neem is a force to be reckoned with when it comes to keeping dandruff at bay. This is because of its anti-fungal and anti-bacterial properties, which gets rid of those dreadful white flakes from the scalp in one go.

To make a dandruff treatment with it, boil 2 handfuls of neem leaves in 3 - 4 cups of water until the water turns green in colour. Separate the leaves from the water, mash them into a paste and apply it over your scalp. Leave it for 30 minutes and wash it off with the neem water. Try this once a week for a month to watch your flakes fade away.

Banana

Next time you find a banana gone bad, don't toss it. Instead, make a mean hair mask with it that'll remove dandruff from your life for good. It works because of banana's rich potassium content, which tames the flaking at the scalp and nourishes the hair.

Make a banana mask by mashing 1 overripe banana with half a cup of milk and 1 teaspoon of honey. Apply it over your scalp, leave it for 40 minutes and wash it off with warm water. Apply this mask weekly for a month to get shiny, dandruff-free hair.

Fenugreek

If you thought fenugreek (or methi) was only meant to be added to your food, that's where you're wrong. Its seeds are rich with nicotinic acid which sweeps away dandruff from the scalp and leaves the hair stronger.

Make a fenugreek hair mask for dandruff by soaking 2 handsfull of the seeds in a cup of water overnight. The next morning, combine it into a paste, apply it to your scalp and leave it for 30 minutes. Wash it off thoroughly with cold water. For best results, repeat this treatment thrice a week for a flake-free scalp.

Apple Cider Vinegar

Besides just adding a tangy tinge to your meal, apple cider vinegar can also get rid of dandruff with ease. The acidic properties of it cleanse the scalp and remove even the most stubborn flakes.

Make a mixture of quarter cup apple cider vinegar and quarter cup water. Apply it over the roots of your hair, leave it to dry for 20 minutes and wash it off with cold water. If you repeat this treatment once a week for three weeks, you'll see visibly less flaking on your scalp.
