There are many milestones in romantic relationships and one of the most important and defining ones is when you finally meet the parents. If you're lucky, it'll be a planned meeting and not an impromptu one - you've definitely got some prepping to do before that meeting. Take time out, sit down with your boyfriend and get him to spill all these details.
1. What his parents' names are
This doesn't usually come up in conversation so make sure you ask him to tell you. While you won't be addressing them by their given names, it's always good to know. Especially if you don't want parts of the conversation to go over your head.
2. What all do they know about you?
It's necessary to know this. There might be things that he has told them about you that in an ideal situation, you might not have wanted him to. So it's best to be prepared beforehand.
3. What to say when they ask about future plans
Now to the real stuff. Parents, being parents, tend to ask you about what you've got planned for the future, now that you guys are together. And it's best to be on the same page as your boyfriend when they do. Trust me, it can be pretty awkward if you aren't.
4. What their professions and hobbies are
If the meeting isn't going well, it's easy to turn to topics that you know will engage them in an animated conversation. Also, it comes in handy when your boyfriend excuses himself for some reason or the other.
5. What they like...
My mother always told me never to go anywhere empty handed. And while it didn't really stick to all occasions, it was definitely good advice for when one's meeting their boyfriend's parents. A box of muffins, pastries, just biscotti even - if that's what they fancy. But nothing too over-the-top. Something that they like and will use for sure.
