56-Year-Old Naomi Watts Opens Up About Sex And Dating During Menopause: "I Was Mortified"

Sex may be the stuff of romantic comedies and hot and heavy novels directed mainly at young adults but that doesn't mean other age groups don't get to enjoy it. Yes, those who fall in the middle-age and senior categories too can have a satisfying sex life, even if it does come with the challenges that age brings.

The sex lives of women especially, are greatly affected by factors like pregnancy and menopause as they advance in age. Hollywood actress Naomi Watts took a step towards normalising the taboo topic when she spoke about a sexual encounter with her now-husband actor Billy Crudup.

The actress opened up to host Drew Barrymore on The Drew Barrymore Show about sex and intimacy as a menopausal woman. She recalled her first sexual encounter with Billy, which left her a wee bit embarrassed. After spending a little too much time in the bathroom, she wondered, "Like, what am I gonna do? And I'm scratching away", speaking of the menopausal treatment patch she was wearing because of its adhesive on her skin.

After a bit of time, the concerned actor, asked her, "Are you okay? Are you not in the mood?" Naomi, visibly mortified, said "No, I just, well, it was look, I'm in menopause and I have treatment, and I have this patch and I'm wearing it and it leaves this...I'm old, should I just leave?" To this, Billy replied, "We're the same age. We're the same age. What is this? This is science. How can I help?"

It just goes to show that though intimacy during menopause is a subject for women that isn't often broached, when it really should be. While Naomi didn't shy away from addressing the sensitive topic, it was commendable at how supportive Billy was throughout.

That's inspiration as best as any that no matter how mortifying the situation may be, even a sexual one, a little emotional support can go a long way.
