Time and again, we've all heard about how marvelously beneficial leafy green vegetables are for one's health. Even though they are packed with the good things our body is often lacking, we barely ever touch them. Why? Because in our heads, leafy green vegetables only mean boring spinach and maybe, lettuce. However, there are quite a few more types to explore. So especially if you're overhauling your diet for healthier, smarter eating habits, add in these six leafy green veggies right away.

1. Broccoli

Although broccoli used to be exotic produce that was barely available, it can now be purchased even at local vegetable vendors. According to Live Strong, broccoli comes from the same family as cabbage and is very versatile. Packed with Vitamins and folate, it can be steamed for your salad, tossed into a stir fry or even added to fried rice.

2. Arugula

If you've watched Masterchef Australia, you'll know that arugula, also known as rocket, is a favourite of the judges. And for good reason too. Now only is it rich in calcium and fiber, arugula's distinct peppery taste makes it a wonderful addition to salads and even topped on pizzas.

3. Spinach

Probably the most popular leafy green on this list, there's a reason why spinach is favoured all over the world. It is easily available, isn't very expensive and can be used in many ways - in soups, side dishes and baked casseroles. Spinach contains Vitamins like A, C and K along with being a good source of iron so eat up.

4. Lettuce

The number of varieties of lettuce available will not only blow your mind but also give you plenty to choose from. Iceberg, romaine and endive are just a few of them and are most commonly used in salads. Lettuce is also almost 95 percent water while being jam-packed with iron, Vitamins C and A - all the more reason to add it to your meals.

5. Kale

Kale rose to popularity a few years ago when it was touted as the next big superfood. Since then, it has stayed in public focus as a health favourite. Not only is it the leafy green of the cool folk, kale is also high in Vitamin A and C content. No wonder it's seen in so many green smoothies and salads these days.

6. Bok Choy

You may ask what's that but we're sure you'll soon be adding it to your next meal. Also called Pak Choi, this vegetable is a variant of Chinese cabbage. That's why you might probably find it in dumplings, stir fry dishes and soups. Bok Choy is low in calories while being high in calcium, magnesium, Vitamin A and C.
