With the year wrapping up, we're looking back at some of the most memorable moments in the beauty sphere. Whether they included a jaw-dropping collection launch or a powerful YouTube video, it was ofetn because of a bunch of extraordinary women who loved all things beauty. You may have heard of some of them, while some may be new to you, but here are the top seven beauty moguls of 2017 who gave us massive girl boss goals during the past year.
1. Michelle Phan
When Michelle started making videos back in 2007, she was considered one of the beauty industry's premier vloggers. This was followed by collaborations with the likes of Lancome, her own beauty subscription service, Ipsy, and even her own makeup line with L'Oreal, which, unfortunately, shut down suddenly. This year, she quit social media cold turkey, travelled to Egypt to rediscover herself and announced on YouTube after 10 months that her brand Em Cosmetics was going to be reborn. Em now has a handful of liquid lipsticks as well as Michelle's favourites, the Illustrative eyeliners, showing us just how to rise from the ashes.
2. Huda Kattan
There isn't a single makeup addict who hasn't heard of Huda Beauty. The brand, which was founded by Huda Kattan in 2013, started off with false eyelash extensions (famously worn by Kim Kardashian) and now includes a slew of eyeshadow palettes, highlighter kits and liquid lipsticks. It all began when Huda started out as a makeup artist and blogger in 2010. And this year, she topped Hopper HQ's Instagram Influencer Rich List, making around $18,000 per post. Girl boss goals, right here.
3. Blossom Kochhar
You have to have seen Blossom Kochhar's name on a host of labels across beauty products in the market. Known to be India's foremost aromatherapist, Blossom has studied aromatherapy and herbalism for more than two decades. Along with launching Blossom Kochhar Aroma Magic, a range of beauty products rooted in natural remedies in 1992, she founded her own creative college with academies for grooming, makeup and hair. 2017 was a big year for Blossom, as she launched a variety of facial kits, eye products and a completely green salon that operates on the philosophy of responsible beauty.
4. Kylie Jenner
This one, right here, needs no introduction. The youngest sister in the Kardashian clan is also the second richest among them, valued at around $41 million. For that, she must thank her namesake brand, Kylie Jenner Cosmetics. With its phenomenal following, it has the unique distinction of selling out products within 30 minutes of their launch. Her famous lip kits and the aptly named Ky-lighters and Ky-shadows sell like hot cakes, ensuring Kylie laughs all the way to the bank.
5. Jen Atkin
After growing up in a small town and leaving it all to do odd jobs in Los Angeles, Jen Atkin managed to snag a receptionist's gig at a salon frequented by celebrities. Soon enough, through hard work and word of mouth publicity, she was soon styling the hair of celebrities like Minka Kelly and Nicole Ritchie. Once she met Kim Kardashian through friends, a partnership that has been going strong for several years began. Last year, Jen launched her own brand of hair products Ouai, which has found a large fan following for their innovative products like anti-frizz sheets.
6. Namrata Soni
Ever wondered who the woman behind Sonam Kapoor's immaculate makeup and gorgeous hairstyles is? The answer is Namrata Soni. A renowned name in Bollywood and celebrity circles, Namrata has beautified the likes of Jacqueline Fernandez and Deepika Padukone for magazine covers, advertisements, movies and press appearances. Besides just prettying up all of B-town, Namrata also teaches makeup and has her lines of signature false eyelashes and makeup bags.
7. Emily Weiss
After working at several fashion magazine, Emily founded Into The Gloss, her beauty blog, in 2010, after realising that beauty didn't receive specialised coverage. Soon enough, with the intelligent content and clean design, the site became a popular name in beauty circles. But that wasn't enough for Emily. In 2014, she went on to found Glossier, a beauty brand. With its minimalistic packaging, potent potions and millennial pink colours, Glossier has gone on to become one of the front runners in the beauty spheres with products like cloud paint and brow tint.
Thanks for the girl boss goals, 2017 - we can't wait to take them into the next year.
