Many hold the perception that millennials lead a fairly unhealthy lifestyle. And for most part, they're right. From late nights to bad eating habits to binge eating and the merry-making on weekends - what we consider an average (and happening) lifestyle can be quite unhealthy in many ways, mentally and physically. So, after much ado, and a lot of soul searching, I decided to finally do what everyone I know is doing - join a gym. Oh, I had reasons of course: you will be surprised how conducive a 9-5 sedentary job can be to a hearty paunch. A job where you can eat at your desk, may I mention.
It is amazing how many foreboding thoughts you can have on your way to the gym for the first time. What if the machine breaks and the weight falls on you? What if everybody laughs at your lanky body behind your back? What if you keep working out for days, weeks, months - and there are no results to show for it? Let me tell you something, though; these are some of the most ridiculous thoughts you will ever have. In the first week of joining a gym, there will be many revelations and experiences you will come face to face with. Here are a few.
There will be a lot of staring around
In those tiny breaks that you take between your reps, you will not be able to help but watch all the ripped, buff people who look like they have never left the gym. You will be as enamored by them as you will wonder if you can ever be half as strong and dedicated as them. Don't. Just patiently work out, put in the effort and wait.
You will probably feel lost
There were times when I was simply staring at machines, not knowing where to start and where to end, let alone how to work the machine and for what purpose. But in all honesty, it takes a while to get the drill.
You might feel like you are dying
No really. By the end of a couple of days when your muscles are sore and your body is screaming for rest, you will want to take the rest of the week off from work and never ever see the face of a gymnasium again. But, persevere.
The diet will give you some funky breath
If you are being all thorough and following a diet with your gym regime, chances are that the shift in eating habits will give you some funky breath for a while.
There are people who love checking themselves out
Yes. In the mirrors all around. But let's allow some hard earned vanity, shall we? Maybe if you stick to this, you will end up like them too.
Men get pumped up the moment a 'heartbreak' song comes up
I kid you not. There is some strange yet understandable connection that guys have towards songs addressing heartbreak. Maybe it's the whole "I'll show her what she missed out on" attitude that eggs them on.
You will feel like everyone is watching you
They aren't. It's all in your head. Keep working out, there is a long way to go. Let's not lose sight.
