Liza Minnelli's Biggest Life Regret Is Not Having Experienced Motherhood

Oscar and Emmy Award-winner Liza Minnelli achieved a lot in her career before retiring in 2022. And yet, she still has one major regret. In Bruce David Klein's new documentary, Liza: A Truly Terrific Absolutely True Story, Liza confessed on 20/20 back in 1980: “I desperately want a family. I really want a family.”

Liza suffered three miscarriages before the age of 34, one with ex-husband Jack Haley Jr. and two with ex-husband, Mark Gero. The latter left her “profoundly grieved.”.

“I have a hiatal hernia, which I got when I was pregnant, and they put me upside down trying to hold the baby—and the baby passes away anyway,” Liza revealed to The Guardian in 2008. The star, who completed five stints in rehab for drug and alcohol usage, once told SAGA about never having been a mother: “It's one of my life's true regrets.”

While motherhood is a different experience, Liza quite had an impact on her many godchildren, nephews, and nieces, like the daughter of her half-sister Lorna Luft and the children of her best friend, the late Allan Lazare.

The star's friend of 50 years, Allan Lazare, revealed her “disappointment” at not having children. Allan stated, “We have been with Liza through all her emotional setbacks, like miscarriages. If she had to pick one thing that she's disappointed in in her life, it's not being a mother.” Alan further added, “She would have been a great mother. She has so much to give. She's been so wonderful with our children.”

Alan's wife Arlene also reflected on the special bond between her daughter and Liza: “We have a picture when our daughter was three years old around a Christmas tree with Liza hugging her, and then 35 years later, when our daughter had a three-year-old, we have pictures around that same Christmas tree.”

Not only this, Liza's childhood best friend Mia Farrow added in the documentary how, “She (Liza) is godmother to my twins (Matthew and Sascha Previn), who are 50 now, and she's never missed a birthday, anything.”
