We all take fashion inspiration from the retro years of early 90s and 80s to revamp our fashion choices but it looks like this is not only limited to humans, but extends to animals too. Researchers suspect that orcas might be reviving a peculiar fashion statement that has not been seen since the 1980s. Scientists in Washington State have observed that at least one orca is seen balancing salmon on its head; a trend that is known as the “dead salmon hat.” A 32-year-old male orca known as J27 Blackberry was photographed flaunting the same salmon hat trend at Point No Point, Washington.
The scientists also spotted the stylish whale this autumn season in Puget Sound. It is said that these mammals are not just sporting these hats to look fancy for their neighbours but to also allow them to enjoy a snack as they travel along on their oceanic journey. Scientists speculate that salmon hats are one of the ways used by whales to combat a lack of food options in certain areas of the sea.
The strange phenomenon was first documented in 1987, when a female orca was spotted to be wearing a salmon hat for nearly the whole year. After a few weeks more, other orcas began to adopt the unique fashion. The trend seemed to have disappeared, but now after nearly 37 years, it has made a comeback as of November 2024.
Orcas are creatures known to be highly intelligent and social, and it looks like they too love to experiment with fashion.
