All FKA Twigs Sees Is A "Strong Woman Of Colour" In Her Calvin Klein Ad

We're only 12 days into the New Year but one fashion brand has proved to be newsworthy already. Calvin Klein has made plenty of headlines in 2024 already, the latest one involving FKA Twigs. The British artist starred in a black and white fashion campaign for the designer which, as reported by Variety, faced censorship in UK. After receiving complaints that it was "overly sexualized" and objectified women, the advertisement was promptly banned by the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA). FKA has now headed to Instagram where she posted the campaign photo in question with her thoughts clapping back on the controversy.

In the picture, the contours of Twigs' bare toned body are visible on one side while being covered on the other. She wore a dark long sleeve shirt which is cuffed at the elbows and left unbuttoned, which covered half of her body. FKA's skin gleamed even in the black and white picture and her hair was braided with her signature septum ring around her nose. In the caption, she said, "I do not see the 'stereotypical sexual object' that they have labelled me. I see a beautiful strong woman of colour whose incredible body has overcome more pain than you can imagine. In light of reviewing other campaigns past and current of this nature, I can't help but feel there are some double standards here. So to be clear...I am proud of my physicality and hold the art I create with my vessel to the standards of women like Josephine Baker, Eartha Kitt and Grace Jones who broke down barriers of what it looks like to be empowered and harness a unique embodied sensuality. Thank you to ck and mert and marcus who gave me a space to express myself exactly how I wanted to - I will not have my narrative changed."

Last week, it was Jeremy Allen White who broke the internet with his Calvin Klein campaign. The Bear actor posed for the underwear campaign on a rooftop in downtown New York while wearing nothing but a pair of CK briefs in black and white.

With one campaign going viral and the other getting banned both from the same designer, navigating digital imagery in fashion certainly can be tricky.
