The weekend saw a touch of pure ethnicity in Bollywood, brought to you by none other than Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. B-town stars and traditional Indian wear have always gone hand-in-hand. During this scorching season, celebrities are opting more and more for relaxed kurtas and airy churidars. But Aishwarya decided to take the desi upgrade up a few notches higher with an ensemble we haven't seen on her in recent times.
A ceremony, held in Pune by the Bunts' Sangha, honoured Aishwarya with the Woman of Substance award. And we couldn't agree more that she deserves it. Besides acting in a crop of Hollywood flicks with a strong base in Bollywood, the former Miss World is also a supporter of many charitable organisations and the Goodwill ambassador of Smile Train for cleft corrections. Truly a beauty, inside and out.
At the award ceremony, Aishwarya looked divine in a bright pink lehenga choli with a grey dupatta and accents, gold embroidery and heavy gold jewellery. The ensemble was Masaba Gupta's aptly named Knockout Pink Lehenga, which is from the designer's new Summer 2018 line. With it, Aishwarya wore a pink toned lip, winged eyeliner and her hair worn centre parted and straight down, a look which has come to be associated with her. She did look lovely but even a traditional bun with flowers in her hair would have complemented the ensemble like a dream.
The ethereal beauty has been a long-time fan of decking up in desi glam for formal functions, from the Cannes red carpet to movie premieres. When it comes to picking traditional wear, we usually spot Aishwarya in structured salwar suits, anarkali sets or sarees with mesh dupattas.
Remember this peach toned Abu Jani - Sandeep Khosla set from festive celebrations?
Or does this embellished sherwani suit from the same designers ring a bell?
When she's not wearing Abu-Sandeep. Aishwarya usually picks something high-octane from Sabyasachi. It's safe to say that shimmery suits and straight cuts are Aishwarya's comfort zone when it comes to Indian wear. That's what makes this outing of hers all the more special. Not only is it a brighter palette from her usual pastels and blacks, slipping into a lehenga does wonders for her style too. How we enjoy stylish surprises when they look as good as this one.
Donning heavy Indian wear in summer can sometimes feel overwhelming but not how Aishwarya Rai Bachchan does it. A pop of colour here, minimal makeup there and the stunner is good to know. Hope you're taking notes for the upcoming slew of summer weddings.
