It's the day that Alia Bhatt had been waiting for; the day of her Met Gala debut. While Deepika Padukone and Priyanka Chopra both attended the fashion extravaganza for the very first time in 2017, the Bollywood actress finally made her way to steps of New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art. For the incredible occasion, Alia was dressed by Prabal Gurung in a fairytale-esque gown of frothy tulle, satin and pearl.
Prabal took to Instagram to post Alia's pictures with the caption, "More than 100,000 pearls were hand embroidered in India on satin-faced organza from Europe and all made in Atelier Prabal Gurung, New York. A well-travelled dress for the global superstar. Alia Bhatt wears Atelier Prabal Gurung at the Met Gala 2023. It was my dearest friend Karan Johar's 40th birthday in Mumbai, where I first met Alia.
I had heard rave reviews about her through him and my brother Pravesh, who was assisting Karan in her debut film. I was immediately taken by her when I met her. A petite ingénue whose simmering fire within her was palpable to all of us. One film after another, she has surpassed anyone's expectations and thrilled us with her creative genius. She's a powerhouse performer. To me, she is one of the finest actors we have right now globally, but above all, she's a friend, a good friend, and a loyal one; that's what makes her extremely special. We've talked about a Met moment for a long time. I have invited her before, but she's always been wise enough to say let's wait. This time however, she felt it was the right moment, so she said yes and off we went to our wildest imaginations along with Anaita to create a homage to Karl that celebrated her heritage (100,000 pearls hand embroidered in Mumbai), my love for Karl ( he is my master, and yes he did give me my CVFF award) and all made in New York.
For me, Chanel couture brides have been the most iconic brides in fashion. So we chose Claudia Schiffer's 1992 Chanel bridal look as an inspiration And the rest is history. Alia, forever grateful we will have this for posterity. Thank you for the beautiful memory. In her own Instagram caption, Alia spoke about how the Chanel bride seen on Claudia Schiffer was inspiration for her look, the number of pearls it included and why her dress was white. She said, "I have always been fascinated by the iconic Chanel brides. Season after season, the genius of Karl Lagerfeld shone through in the most innovative and awe-inspiring couture. My look tonight was inspired from this and in particular by supermodel Claudia Schiffer's 1992 Chanel bridal look. I wanted to do something that felt authentic (hello, pearls!) and proudly made in India. The embroidery, made with a 100,000 pearls is a labour of love by @prabalgurung. I'm so proud to wear you for my first Met. A girl can never have too many pearls... and the right accessories to complement the look which in our case translated to the bow of pearls on my hair. Oh, and it's white, for my Choup-ED".

But it wasn't just her outfit that paid tribute to the theme 'Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty'. Alia's jewellery and accessories were crafted by Outhouse. She wore a custom made crystal embellished monogram gloveltte; a fingerless glove style that Karl Lagerfeld always had on. Along with it were earrings and a bow-style headpiece, also by Outhouse.
