Actress Angelina Jolie has always been one to lead the pack and buck convention. According to Elle Magazine USA, Angelina Jolie did just that when she agreed to feature on the cover for their March issue. This is unusual because a star of her stature rarely cover magazines unless they are promoting a project and Angelina doesn't currently have a film to plug - First They Killed My Father, which she directed, released last year. However, seems like Angelina wasn't entirely lacking an agenda: she did have something she wanted to draw attention to - International's Women's Day which is celebrated globally on March 8.
In a candid conversation with politician John Kerry for Elle Magazine USA, Angelina Jolie touches upon some issues that both have been working with great effort to rectify. They spoke about climate change, what it means to be a patriot and a citizen of the world, law and politics - but the underlying issue, as it would rightly be in an issue dedicated to Women's Day, was that of women's rights and how the lack of it affects everyone and everything.
While there were many things about this conversation that stood out and made people think, the high point of the conversation for many has been the advice Angelina Jolie said she gives to her daughters. "I tell my daughters, what sets you apart is what you are willing to do for others. Anyone can put on a dress and makeup. It's your mind that will define you. Find out who you are, what you think, and what you stand for. And fight for others to have those same freedoms. A life of service is worth living." Angelina has six children, three of them daughters - Zahara, 13; Shiloh, 11; and Vivienne, 9.
Angelina Jolie has been working for over a decade to shed light on and create awareness around women's issues and rights around the globe. In her roles as a goodwill ambassador and special envoy to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, and co-founder of Preventing Sexual Violence in Conflict Initiative, she's completed nearly 60 field missions and travelled all over the world to meet women in plight, specifically women who have been survivors of rape.
For the last few years, one has seen little of Angelina Jolie on screen. The actress has transitioned to directing, First They Killed My Father being her third feature behind the camera. Star of films such as The Changeling, Gone In 60 Seconds, The Bone Collector and the Lara Croft series, Angelina won a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her performance in 1999's Girl, Interrupted. Her most recent work has been animated film Kung Fu Panda 3, in which she voices Tigress. She last played a lead role in 2015's By The Sea, which she also directed. It co-starred her then-husband Brad Pitt.
