Although it may still have miles to go, beauty has come a long way. Diversity is the name of the game being taken very seriously by beauty brands all over the world. Globally renowned entities like Fenty Beauty and Dior Backstage have created makeup in numerous shades especially for women of colour. And it isn't just in the product and formulas. In ideology and imagery too, women like Pat McGrath, Lupita Nyong'o and Tyra Banks are well-known faces that have come to represent a wider range of beauty as we know it.
Cosmetic giant Estée Lauder welcomed model Anok Yai onboard as their newest face, a move which has been applauded all over the world. 20-year-old Anok Yai is an Egyptian-born American model of Sudanese descent who has had plenty of career highlights since she began modelling when photographed for street style as a teenager. She was the second black model to open a Prada fashion show after Naomi Campbell and the very first Sudanese one to do so. Anok has gone on to star in a Nike campaign and cover magazines like Dazed.
Anok Yai joins a starry line-up at Estée Lauder including Misty Copeland, Grace Elizabeth, Kendall Jenner, Karlie Kloss, Yang Mi, Carolyn Murphy, Hilary Rhoda, Joan Smalls and Fei Fei Sun. Along with their diverse faces, there's another gold star for the brand as their shade range is set to grow wider and inclusive of more skin tones.
