Step 1: Find a comfortable floor and stretch well

While doing somersaults, one needs to be very particular about the surface you choose. You can opt for a yoga mat or look for a gym floor with a rubberised surface as hard surfaces like wooden floors can lead to serious injuries. Once you get a comfortable floor, start with basic body stretching. Your body needs to be fully prepared and stretched before doing any gymnastic exercises. When doing somersaults, specific body parts like the neck, hands and ankles should be flexible and well-stretched.

Step 2: Crouch down and push from your legs

The next step is to bend your legs and place your hands in front of each foot. Your chest should be above your thighs and your head should be down looking at your belly button. Make sure to never touch your head to the ground while doing this exercise. Lean forward and push from your legs, aligning your hips over your head, with your hands firmly on the ground. Keep your shoulders straight while doing this.

Step 3: Continue to roll and stand up

The main step of the somersault is to continue to roll your upper back without letting your head and neck touch the ground. As you roll, make sure to keep your shoulders straight and do not jump doing the somersault as it can lead to serious injuries. To finish the somersault, roll back to your legs and use your momentum to stand back straight.

Somersaults require a lot of practice and guidance so if you are a beginner, make sure you do them with supervision and while seeking professional coaching.
