Red flags in a relationship

  1. Controlling behaviour

Many people consider controlling behaviour as their partner simply ‘being protective'. Excessive jealousy or possessiveness indicates trust issues with your partner and them taking out their insecurities on you can lead to a toxic relationship.

  1. Gaslighting

Another big red flag in any relationship is gaslighting. Gaslighting is also known as emotional abuse and it involves manipulating someone into questioning their sanity and beliefs.

  1. Lack of empathy

If your partner is not available to support and comfort you during tough times, then they lack emotional and physical empathy. Your partner should be your shoulder to cry on and your calm after a storm, but if that's not the case then it's a big red flag.

  1. Narcissism

Narcissistic tendencies are considered a big red flag in any relationship. People who overlook their partner's needs and wants in favour of their own are a greater cause for concern.

  1. Abusive behaviour

Abuse, be it physical or emotional, is never acceptable in any relationship. If you are tolerating abusive behaviour in any form; physically or mentally, the ideal step is to leave the relationship at the earliest.

How to deal with the red flags in any relationship

While we have identified some common relationship red flags, it's important to consider your personal red flags in your own partner. The right way to deal with red flags in any relationship is to have open communication and alert your partner about their behaviour. Let them know what is acceptable or unacceptable for you. If your partner is receptive to this, you can give the relationship a chance. But if not, the best option is to spend time apart or move on from the relationship.
