Behind every strand of hair sitting on your legs and arms lies a patriarchal body standard that has existed for centuries. But the fact of the matter is it's just body hair. Whether you remove it or not, does it necessarily have to be such a humongous deal? We certainly don't think so. After all, one's body, one's choices. Actress Tillotama Shome took to Instagram to air her views on apologies. In the photo, she is seen smiling in the sunshine with her hands behind her head. She wore a sleeveless black tank top with the word un-apologetic written over the front and put her armpit hair on display. In the caption, Tillotama says, "I do say Sorry a lot. Worst is when I apologise in anticipation of someone's apology, as if it's a Hello. I am sorry if I did something good because I could have done it better. The visceral ones of course, slip out of your mouth in silence. The t shirt is a reminder to use it less and mean it more." We agree with her thoughts but it was also her thoughts on body hair that stayed with us. As she displayed her own in the photo, she added in the caption, "Oh and about body hair, yeah not sorry about it. I wear it as I like it. Its not a statement. I also wax. I also don't."
Tillotama definitely isn't alone. In the past, Madonna's armpit hair has made an appearance on Instagram. And her daughter Lourdes isn't far behind when it comes to doing what she pleases, as far as body hair is concerned at least.
In fact, for the MET Gala 2021, Lourdes wore a pink sleeveless ensemble with her armpit hair on display. How's that for a girl who makes her own choices as far as her body is concerned?
Whichs begs the question; does something as personal as one's body hair always need to be a statement? If you wax, shave or epilate it away, does it mean you're bowing down on your knees to patriarchy or could it be that you just like the way your skin feels when it's smooth? And when you let it grow in abounds, does it mean you're making a path-breaking statement or could it be that you just didn't feel like picking up a razor that week? There is no wrong or right when it's personal choice so Tillotama's words definitely gave us something to think about.
