We expect only one task from our umbrellas: to save us from rain and excessive sunlight. But, it seems like even umbrellas are being robbed of their basic capabilities to ward off rain. Or, that's what the Internet is saying about Gucci and Adidas' new “Sun umbrella” collection. When a luxury fashion brand meets a top-notch sportswear company, we do expect eccentric style statements. But the less than a waterproof umbrella isn't pleasant to most Internet users. The umbrella costs more than Rs 1 lakh (11,100 yuan or £1,329). According to Gucci's website, the parasol is "not waterproof and is meant for Sun protection or decorative use”.

Well, the Internet cannot come to terms with this “decorative” umbrella. The fashion brands faced heavy backlash in China where buyers are criticising the luxury item on the social media platform Weibo. Across the world, Twitter users have also mocked the parasol's utility. A user said, “It is not even waterproof rain will still beat you, if I ask what's the point na ya'all will say am too broke.”

People preferred to call the umbrella a “status symbol”. A person wrote, “Imagine buying a $1600 umbrella as a status symbol, discovering it doesn't stop the rain, then finding out it was never intended to work in the first place.”

I'd rather get publicly swindled out of $1600 in a low level ponzi scheme than be seen holding a gucci umbrella

A post referred to Gucci and Adidas' new item as “another sign of the impending collapse of late-stage capitalism.” The tweet read, “Gucci-Adidas collaboration umbrella selling for $1,600, which /checks notes... is not waterproof, don't work in the rain.”

As per a section of users, despite being priced so high and its inability to be useful during heavy showers, the umbrella will be quite a sought-after object. That's the belief of Internet users. Undercutting this idea, a user wrote, “I'm sure will be sold out by tomorrow.”

Gucci and Adidas' umbrellas, much like Balenciaga's torn sneakers, are facing a lot of attention along with criticism. Would you buy an umbrella for Rs 1 Lakh to just waves in this heat wave?
