How To Wear A Sheer Dress (Should You Want To) Without Looking Tacky

Let's be honest, sheer clothing isn't for everyone. Although you might want to try it, given that the "nude" dress has been in vogue for a while now, the risk of feeling overexposed is too real. But what do you do if you order something expensive online and it turns out to be a little more transparent than you had imagined? Or, you just wake up one day and decide it's time to try a sheer dress? Is there anyway you can wear it without feeling "too naked"?

Well, seems like there is.

For a recent awards show, two women who are thought to always be on top of the fashion game, namely singer and actor Monica Dogra and actor Vaani Kapoor, arrived wearing transparent black dresses and yes, they really did rock the look - Monica in Namrata Joshipura and Vaani in Redemption.

1. The right underclothing is key

You might want to wear a transparent dress, but unless you're looking to expose more than you intended, what you wear underneath is extremely important. Both Monica and Vaani made sure that their inner wear provided full coverage: high waist hipster briefs in the same colour as their dresses - black. While Vaani's dress seemed to have sturdy inbuilt pads at the bust, Monica chose to wear a bandeau. Both seemed to work since neither dress, despite being sheer, didn't appear raunchy. Both Monica and Vaani looked elegant where they could easily have ended looking trashy.

2. The dress should be heavily embellished or printed

Both Monica and Vaani's dresses, while different, did have one thing in common. They weren't just made out of plain sheer fabric. Vaani's dress was heavily beaded while Monica's was decorated with flowers and sequins. The work on the dresses distracts a little bit from the sheerness of the fabric, giving it just the right amount of transparency.

3. Layer up

While Vaani showed her dress off full on by wearing nothing over the dress, Monica Dogra opted for a layered look by wearing a matching blazer. Perhaps, just like most other girls, Monica was slightly more conscious about wearing the transparent fabric out for a public event. Or, it was just a part of her outfit. Either way, we think it's a smart way to wear a transparent dress, should you want to.
