Anamika Khanna's Kolkata Home Pays Homage To Art And Textile

Indian fashion designer Anamika Khanna is one of the finest in the country. The designer, who is known for her impeccable pieces and fine craft, has now shared a piece of her heart with the world. In an exclusive interview with AD, Anamika took the audience through her Kolkata house. Her home in south Kolkata's Alipore neighbourhood is designed by the Sri Lankan genius Channa Daswatte and is a beautiful portrayal of art, textiles, ceramics and everything her family loves.

The entrance with a tall Burmese teak double door leads to Anamika's dining room where every object will grab your attention. The theme of the room is surrounded by dark walls. Candles, tuberose pack vases and lotus blooms add an aesthetic touch to the room. A Jayasri Burman painting spans across one side of the room, making the whole area look more appealing. What makes the room more special is the hand-painted temple that Anamika sourced from an art dealer's collection. Talking about the room, she said, “Our dining room wasn't even planned. I'd thought we would fit it in the living room”.

Her house elaborates craftsmanship in every form. A trio of sheer ivory chikankari partitions welcomes visitors entering through the main door. Beige couches in the living room complemented with silver cushions add to the beauty of a neutral palette. Embroidered panels, featured on the walls of staircase landings, lead up to the terrace each showcasing the signature style of the designer.

Art is what makes her house special as you will find it in every corner. Talking about the same, she said, “It's not just about important artists but also pieces that we love and feel strongly connected with.” That includes some of her favorites like a stupa carved with 108 Buddhas, a Paresh Maity sculpture and paintings by the likes of Samir Aich, Dhruvi Acharya and many more.

She shared one of her own treasured personal corners with us, which happens to be her walk-in closet. The closet covers an entire corridor and is covered in mirrors. “I wanted my wardrobe to be bigger than my bedroom,” she tells AD. Lastly, she takes us through her garden, where ferns and trees grow naturally. Plants like Champa, Juhi flowers and an old peepal tree occupy a place with pride. Anamika described her garden and said, "I consider it a pillar of our home”.
