This Kerala Man's 'Dress Bank' Helps Underprivileged Brides Get The Wedding Dress Of Their Dreams

Decking up on one's special day in an equally special wedding dress is a dream for almost every girl but the fact of the matter is, not everyone has the luxury to afford it. Amenities like food banks and blood banks have existed for decades but this man from Malappuram has taken thoughtful charitable causes a step further. His brilliant and unique idea caters to underprivileged brides hence, he started a 'dress bank' for the same. Nasar Thootha, a taxi driver from Kerala, started this dress bank to bring to life the wedding day dreams of women with limited means. Nasar's dress bank collects bridal outfits through donations and offers them for free to those who cannot afford them.

As per reports, this initiative was started in March 2020 with a motive to cater to underprivileged brides by giving them free wedding outfits. Nasar used the mediums of WhatsApp and Facebook to request people to donate their wedding dresses for a good cause and that's how the initiative grew bigger over time. Nasar has been dedicated to passing on the outfits to the needy. In an interview with Al Jazeera, he said, "When the family doesn't have the money to travel a long distance, or if any of the members are ill, the dress is sent directly to them through our network of volunteers." He also mentioned in the interview that Thootha just considers himself as a medium to pass them to the needy and the donated dresses are collected from different locations across Kerala through different means. In a recent post on social media featuring another interview at INK News he captioned his post 'Wedding dress is free here. They are also angels, let them dress up.'

It all started when he returned from Saudi Arabia and began helping the needy, "After returning from Saudi Arabia, I was helping state agencies rehabilitate the poor and homeless. During that period, I met many families who were struggling to arrange wedding dresses for their daughters, which are usually expensive. So I decided to help them," said Thootha to Al Jazeera
