Lakme Fashion Week 2018: Designer Monisha Jaising Discusses Her Upcoming Grand Finale

As far as the Indian fashion industry is concerned, Monisha Jaising needs no introduction. One of India's foremost designers, Monisha launched her eponymous label in the 90s. Today, she's known around the world for her luxe, contemporary designs that showcase unique silhouettes, drapes and details. This season at Lakme Fashion Week Winter Festive 2018, Monisha will helm the Grand Finale as designer for the prestigious event. Swirlster spoke to the designer about her upcoming collection and what we can expect to see on the runway.

Swirlster: Where did you draw inspiration from for your grand finale collection?

Monisha Jaising: This season, Lakme's beauty statement is 'Shades Of A Diva' and my entire collection is completely based on it. In all, it's glamourous and still laidback, which is right up my alley.

Swirlster: Do trends play an important part of your designs?

Monisha Jaising: Of course. Trends are present in every field to be pushed and reinvented. They play a part as designers derive from current trends for their creations.

Swirlster: How does Lakme's 'Shades Of A Diva' beauty statement work with your clothing collection?

Monisha Jaising: A dictionary defines a diva as a celebrated, confident woman. That's the persona of my collection. It's comfy, ahead of the curve and in sync with the beauty statement. Overall, it's a mix of effortless, glamourous and confidence.

Swirlster: What has been the most exciting part about designing a collection like this?

Monisha Jaising: It's all been so exciting. Everywhere a diva goes, whether it's the metro or the beach, she has so many different shades to her and always wears her personality. She's a mix of strong and calm so creating all of it has been a ball.

Swirlster: What can we expect to see for your grand finale show?

Monisha Jaising: It's an absolutely beautiful collection. There are 65 garments overall and each of them is very special. There are many more than 50 shades; 65 in all with colour across the boards and each of them captures every mood of a diva.
