Makeup 101: How To Contour Like Sonam Kapoor

Admit it, even if you fall somewhere in the spectrum of a makeup enthusiast, you've tried your hand at contouring at some point or another. Be it Sonam's razor sharp cheekbones or those million confusing face maps that inspired you, you tried but ended up looking only muddy. Today, we're sorting that out for you. Step 1 - Contouring is one of the final steps of one's base makeup so make sure you've layered your makeup well before you begin. Start with moisturiser, move on to primer, foundation and then contouring.

Step 2 - The tricky part with contouring is selecting the right tools for the job, a place in which most people fail. If you have cool undertones, shades like taupe and greyish brown work well as contour colours. For warm undertones, select yellow toned shades to contour with. Whether you choose a powder bronzer or a cream one, a dense angled brush or damp pointed sponge will do the job.

Step 3 - Where you trace your contour lines all depends on your bone structure so don't blindly follow tutorials for this step. Instead, take a close look at your face in the mirror to see where your cheekbones and jawlines lie so your contour can go underneath it.

Step 4 - Finally, use your powder bronzer with a brush or your contour stick directly to trace a line along your hairline and temples. Then, extend the line under your cheekbones in the hollows of your cheeks. Since the contour area is larger here, thicken the line slightly. Then extend it directly under your jawline.

Step 5 - To contour your nose and make it appear slimmer, at either side of the nose bridge draw vertical lines. At the tip, draw a small horizontal line to join them together.

Step 6 - Use your brush or sponge to blend the contour tracing thoroughly so that no visible lines show and it looks like a natural shadow on the face.

Step 7 - For smaller areas like the nose, use a narrow brush to blend it in the area without going out of line. And voila - look in the mirror to discover the chiselled face you never had!
