Admit it, your favourite part of getting your nails done is that final coat of lacquer that lends them a stunning sheen. By that moment, you've probably already forgotten about the laborious other steps of the manicure because they aren't really that important, right? Wrong. We're here to tell you that manicures and pedicures aren't just about the superficial appearance of the nails. No, they go a lot deeper than that, my friends.
The first step of any manicure or pedicure is the infused soak. Sure it feels great and makes you want to nod off but its purpose is more than just a tool to make you snooze. Soaking softens the skin and rids its dead cells so especially if your feet or hands are coarse or tanned and your cuticles dry, this gives it a nudge in a softer direction.
Once dry, a scraper is used to prod into the nooks and crannies of your nails and remove the gunk. During the thousands of times you've walked in sandals or washed the dishes, grime has accumulated and nestled itself in the nails. Not only is this icky, it's unhygienic and can cause infections. A scraper prevents that from happening by removing the bacteria and dirt.
Next up, buffing and filing. It may seem unnecessary but let me tell you, it's more important than you know. Over time, ridges form over the nail bed and nails may even grow inwards. However, if regular buffing and filing are maintained for the hands and feet, the nails will have an even base and will grow well in the right direction.
Finally, the best part - the massage. Of course, it's a like 15 minute trip to paradise but there's more to it. Massaging the feet with lotion or oil encourages healthy circulation to the feet. It also moisturises the skin so hangnails and dry patches are banished.
