Okay there, hold that shade. Everyone who has been going on and on about Deepika Padukone and what she wore yesterday to the Met Gala, how bad a stylist Shaleena Nathani is, and how Deepika's attire didn't follow the theme - 'Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination' - for the Gala (and, of course, the plastered down hair) - well, calm the bejesus down. Because turns out the actress WAS totally following the theme in her Prabal Gurung Atelier gown, after all. We don't know if it was in reaction to all the online flak or if this post was scheduled anyway, but Deepika Padukone Instagrammed an explanation of her Met Gala look yesterday.
Turns out, 'cardinal' wasn't just the colour of Deepika's gown - it was actually inspired by the robes worn by cardinals for choir.
Deepika Padukone's take on the Met Gala theme was so subtle, however, that most folks assumed she'd just ignored the dress code. She got a lot of flak online for having appeared to do so:

It didn't help that most celeb invitees really put their hearts into their Met Gala looks. Religious references were embraced quite literally with Rihanna showing up dressed as the Pope, Katy Perry as an angel and home girl Priyanka Chopra in a Virgin Mary-like costume with a bejewelled shroud, made by Ralph Lauren, over her head.

But as explained in the Instagram post, Deepika's gown was not just 'holy' in its cardinal red colour, it was also inspired by the choir robes of the cardinals in its form and silhouette.

Prabal Gurung's gown was a "nod to the cardinal virtues of prudence, courage, temperance, and justice - values Deepika upholds with grace and poise". Well, we will drink to that.
The post almost seems like a statement that was issued to calm everyone down. And while we appreciate the explanation we can't help but wonder about this accountability that artists, designers and creators from all walks of life are held to these days with the power of social media. Because turns out, the explanation for inspiration behind Deepika's dress was already given by the designer to Vogue in one of their articles yesterday. So this post was probably for the hungry consumption of all the internet trolls.
Hallelujah to that.
