It is a fashion tale old and weary - one woman's red carpet is another woman's...well, red carpet, but one where she will boldly go where others fear to tread, stepping out of the usual boxes and upping the ante. When it comes to fashion, the annual Met Gala, held in New York on the first Monday of May, has seen many looks over the years that have pushed the envelope in more ways than one. What you see on the red carpet at the Met Gala every year is more than just some outfits made to wow the world, they border on art and some pieces deserve to be exhibited.
But we get carried away. This morning when we all woke up to Deepika Padukone and Priyanka Chopra's looks on the Met Gala red carpet, it didn't take a lot of thought to pinpoint who out of the two fell under the category of one who pushes the envelope. Instagram was rife with #polls, bloggers were asking their followers whose look they likes better. And many voted for Priyanka.
The theme for this year's Met Gala was 'Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination', a bid for the world to see fashion vis-a-vis religion. Priyanka Chopra wowed us in a custom made Ralph Lauren number that looked like it was made in the image of Mother Mary. An outfit complete with a hood studded with Swarovski crystals and beadwork, the wine red velvet gown kept to the theme while also ensuring Priyanka looked glam.

Meanwhile, Deepika Padukone was seen in a cardinal red Prabal Gurung gown that, although remarkably stunning, failed to win points on the creative front - be it for the silhouette or reflection of the theme.

So it was clear that while Priyanka took a risk (yet again!) and Deepika played it safe. Yet again. Here's a throwback to what the two wore the last time, same place.
Priyanka followed last year's 'avant-garde' dress code with a trench-gown that boasted a giant, detachable skirt.
Deepika ignored the dress code entirely in a sweet white Tommy Hilfiger gown with a diamante hairband.
As you can see, Priyanka with her oh-dear-lord exaggerated trench coat was making a fierce statement while Deepika only looked like she was only there to mark attendance. So do you think it is the international setting that has Deepika's stylists go extra careful? Or the fear of being turned into a viral meme? We sure know that Priyanka doesn't care about either, in fact she will go right ahead and share the best memes on her own social media accounts.
The funny part is that Deepika's choice of clothes is way bolder within the country than outside. We also know that she is a fierce, strong person who lives life on her own terms. What then happened here? In a world where everything is being pushed to the edge in the hope to break the age-old boundaries, fashion statements have their own say. And Deepika sure needs to experiment more rather than playing safe because God knows she has the beauty to rock whatever she puts on. While on the subject, her fans have been begging both Deepika and her stylist Shaleena Nathani to change up her hairstyle.
Here's praying to the heavenly bodies.
