There has been a surprise (or rather a shock) for fashion enthusiasts as the world's respected high fashion brand Mugler would be collaborating with the fast fashion brand H&M. Mugler as a brand has been known for having the signature silhouettes of big shoulders, tiny waists, and wide hips, back in the 90s which made them the top-notch brand that it was. So the collaboration with the popular fast fashion brand H&M was a highly anticipated one. But the glamour of the brand has seen a decline over the years because of the lack of imagination and design creativity. It started fitting into the mould that the fashion industry had created rather than being out of the box, which was primarily their USP.

The brand received backlash before its collaboration with the fast fashion brand H&M was announced. The designs of the brand back in 1992 were women-centric and revolutionary. Mugler had launched a motorcycle bustier in SS92 which included the female torso with a motorcycle. The model gripped her own handlebars, expressing their idea that she is in control of her own destiny. It was a powerful feminist expression even back in the 90s. But Mugler FW22 showed the motorcycle bustier with a simplistic, safe V-shape plain black corset with cut-out details, making no statement whatsoever and just joining the trends of the season on its own bandwagon.

The collaboration with the fast fashion brand H&M will be open to customers in select stores and on their website on 11th May 2023. The question however arises as to what the brand brings to the table. With H&M being a fast fashion producer, sustainability and greener processes are taking a back seat in the production process. So the new collaboration may not lead to anything better on the sustainable fashion forefront. It may be a way for the two brands to be profitable by taking up the disguise of 'accessibility'. For being accessible, the high fashion brand will surely have to compromise on the materials and fabrics. Sadly, consumers may splurge and it may interest them to buy from the collection as a high-fashion brand would be available at affordable pricing. They will see the designer label as a stamp of approval and purchase accordingly, but what remains the fact that should not be ignored is that by doing so they are contributing to the growing issue of fast fashion and overconsumption that is not particularly sustainable and a contributing cause of the depletion of the earth's health.
