Kolkata in West Bengal is known as the cultural capital of India and Bengalis perhaps are known to be the proudest torchbearers of their culture and traditions. When it comes to Durga Puja, the whole Bengali community rejoices in festivities offering their devotion to goddess Durga. However, you must have visited puja pandals and spotted Bengali women adorning their red and white saree with pride and honour. You must have wondered the significance behind the most desirous garment all this while. Traditional Relevance

Originally worn by married Bengali women, the beautiful Lal-Par saree is just of two colours- red and white. While the colour white signifies purity, patience, the innocence of womanhood, the red colour signifies fertility, auspiciousness, new beginnings, and desirability.

It is considered an embodiment of reverence and devotion towards goddess and is primarily worn on Mahalaya, that is seven days prior to Durga Puja to welcome the goddess and on the puja days to mark the celebrations of Sharad Navratri Puja.

In contemporary times, the Lal-Par saree is not limited to married Bengali women but has become a fashion staple during the puja times and on other celebratory occasions.
