Along with the ongoing Ganesh Chaturthi fervour, the harvest festival of Onam 2024 is also being celebrated; majorly across states of Southern India but also in metropolitan cities of the country and even the world. Shilpa Shetty may travel across the world and be based in Mumbai but she definitely hasn't forgotten her roots, this season especially. Recently, the native Mangalorean held a starry Ganpati darshan at her home in Mumbai. Days later, the celebrity personality also satiated her South Indian side by heading for an Onam meal in the city. Traditionally called the Sadya, it comprises of traditional South Indian fare in small portions served on a banana leaf. Shilpa indulged in her Onam Sadya at the restaurant Dakshin located in the ITC Grand Central hotel in Parel, Mumbai.

The Onam Sadhya at Dakshin is more than just a meal; it is an experience steeped in tradition and authenticity, which is what Shilpa Shetty experienced. On your leaf, you will find kootu curry, which is a vegetable medley cooked in brown coconut gravy, kalan that is made from yam and raw banana cooked in coconut and yoghurt as well as thakkali rasam which is made of tempered lentil, tomato, and tamarind extract. Desserts include parippu pradhaman, which is lentils cooked in jaggery and sweetened coconut milk, and pal adai, which is steamed rice flakes cooked in milk with cardamom. 2. South of Vindhyas at The Orchid Hotel, Vile Parle
The Adipoli Onam Sadhya feast at South of Vindhyas aims to immerse guests in the rich flavors of Kerala. Helmed by Chef Bala Subramaniam, it features a meticulously crafted menu featuring 56 authentic dishes that capture the true essence of Southern India. Guests are greeted with kachia moru, which is buttermilk or a thakkali rasam, which is tomato soup. The feast will then unfold with accompaniments like banana chips, jackfruit chips, pavakkai pachadi and nendrankai chips. Available are an array of traditional breads like appam, kal dosa, and malabari paratha with vegetarian main courses like olan, kalan, avial and much more. Also expect red rice, steamed rice and lemon sevai to pair with it. Complete the meal sweetly with desserts from kadala pradhaman to pazham pori. The Onam Sadhya is available at the restaurant for Rs 2,199++ per person and is running from September 12 to 16, 2024.
3. TAT in Vikhroli
At this suburban restaurant, the thali is a tribute to Kerala's legendary culinary heritage. It features the fragrant lentil stew of sambar, tangy yoghurt-based white pumpkin curry called pulissery and classic accompaniments like the tangy tamarind-ginger relish pulli ingi, spicy mango pickle kadumanga, banana chips and crispy pappadums. The perfectly sweet finale to the meal comes from ada pradhaman, which is made with flat rice noodles, organic jaggery, and creamy coconut milk. The restaurant promises to serve the authentic flavors of Kerala while adding a contemporary twist that promises a sensory journey along the Malabar coastline.
4. Santosham Foods in Powai and Manpada
If finding truly authentic South Indian tastes amidst a sea of fusion trends is rare, this spot promises to be different. Santosham translates to 'joy' in Malayalam and Tamil, which it aims to deliver with its authentic South Indian flavours in Mumbai. Their Onam Sadhya 2024 offers a menu featuring over 40 traditional dishes like plada pradhaman, lemon achar and manga kari. The Onam Sadhya is available at the restaurant for Rs 1,099++ per person and is running until September 22, 2024.
5. The Bayview at Hotel Marine Plaza on Marine Drive
Expect the vibrant flavours of Kerala with a special Onam buffet to be held at The Bayview in the Hotel Marine Plaza located on Marine Drive in South Mumbai. Experience the zesty flavours of aromatic lemon rice, colourful and flavorful vegetable thoran as well as the classic Keralite dish of avial, made with a medley of vegetables. End the South Indian spread on a sweet note with creamy and indulgent rice payasam. The Onam buffet is available at the restaurant for Rs 2,800++ per person on September 15, 2024.
