Dubbed the world's largest gathering of humanity — the Maha Kumbh Mela — kickstarted on January 13, 2025 in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh. Devotees from India and abroad will arrive for a holy dip at the confluence of three sacred rivers: the Ganga, Yamuna and Saraswati for the 45-day event, that takes place once in twelve years.

How To Reach

Prayagraj is well-connected by rail, road and air. Prayagraj airport is the closest to the Mela grounds with regular flights from Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Bengaluru and additional trains and flights added. International travellers have to arrive either at Delhi or Varanasi to board a flight to Prayagraj. 

The nearest railway station to the venue is Prayagraj Junction. 

You can find several state-run buses across the country, connecting numerous major destinations. Bookings are available from the Uttar Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (UPSRTC). Additionally, several private operators also offer bus services. 

Accommodation Details

There are two types of accommodation available for an immersive experience

Mela Area Stay: You can choose to stay at the tent cities at the Maha Kumbh Mela. Located near the Triveni Sangam, they provide comfortable accommodations with all the basic amenities. The tents vary in price based on basic setups, luxurious arrangements and private spaces. Staying closer to the venue will help tourists get easy access to rituals, spiritual events and sacred baths minus the commute.

City Area Stay: The other option is to stay at Prayagraj itself. From budget-friendly lodges and comfortable homestays to luxury hotels, the city offers tourists a wide variety of accommodation options with modern amenities and tourist options to check out in the city. 

Things To Remember

Time is of essence for the festival-attendees. Even during last-minute plans, ensure you have pre-booked your tickets and accommodation to secure your spot. 

Carry essential items such as warm clothing, a first-aid kit, toiletries and medicine. Avoid packing too much. Since, it is going to be crowded, wear comfortable outfits and footwear. 

Do not forget to bring your identity proof for security checks. 

Make sure to take the holy dip only at demarcated areas and ghats that are authorised by the Mela administration. Avoid diving in deep waters and follow the instructions of the police and volunteers.
