Auction house, Sotheby's took to Instagram to share that Princess Diana's favourite sheep-print sweater, which the late British royal wore to one of then-Prince Charles' polo matches in 1981 will be auctioned soon. As per the details shared, the bidding will open on August 31, 2023, and will remain open until September 14, 2023. Sotheby's estimates that it will be listed between $50,000 and $80,000 (close to Rs 41,00,000 and Rs 65,60,000 respectively).
The post by Sotheby's read, 'In June 1981, a newly engaged Lady Diana Spencer attended one of Prince Charles' polo matches wearing a red @warmandwonderful sweater decorated with a whimsical black-and-white sheep motif and took the world by storm as the media, fashion critics and the public alike carefully dissected the sweater's black sheep symbolism. After damaging her much-loved sweater, Diana sent it back to the label alongside a repair request but received an entirely new sweater knitted just for her. As we were rummaging through the attic searching for an old pattern this past March, we spotted a small box." Said Warm & Wonderful designers Sally Muir and Joanna Osborne, "Inside, tucked away beside a cotton bedspread was Diana's original red sheep sweater from 1981. A piece of royal fashion history, the sweater will star in our inaugural Fashion Icons sale at #SothebysNewYork this fall, with bidding open from 31 August - 14 September."

The sweater was designed by the British brand Warm & Wonderful, the red garment is widely recognised because of its colour and unique pattern with a single black sheep. The newly knitted sweater went on to become one of the most loved pieces that she wore on multiple occasions.
The news about the auction instantly spread on social media and many netizens were seen commenting on the post. One post read, "Damn this should be in a museum"
Another jokingly commented, "Maybe if we pool our money we'd have a chance", while another one said, "Let's go halves"
