Purging: Expert Advice On The Skin Problem You Never Knew Existed
Tackle skin purging with these tips

So you've picked up a new beauty product that everyone on the Internet has been raving about. However when you use it, you break into redness and bumps. Has this ever happened to you? It may seem unexpected but is normal and what you're possibly experiencing is known as skin purging. We spoke to Dr. Batul Patel, Dermatologist and Medical Director at The Bombay Skin Clinic for her expert advice on the subject.

"Purging often goes by the term skin transformation because that's literally what happens to the skin during this process," says Dr. Batul. Purging most commonly occurs with retinoid usage and why it happens comes down to two main reasons. One is when the skin is sensitive and the other is when only moisturiser is used over and over again for the skin. "If the skin isn't exfoliated consistently, dead skin accumulates and pores get clogged," explains Dr. Batul.

The unexpected breakout is usually associated with the usage of products that contain AHAs, glycolic acid and retinoids which are active ingredients that increase cell turnover. This speeds up the cycle which the skin isn't used to so it is left inflamed and irritated.

So what do you do if you find your skin purging? Here's what Dr. Batul advises - "Wait it out. The condition often settles down in 2 - 6 weeks after which your skin gets used to it. It's also advisable to restrict yourself from moisturising continuously. There are also many newer products with formulations that are just as effective but with reduced side effects." Consulting a dermatologist is ideal as they will prescribe products that's best suited for your type of skin.
