Whether it is the result of a nasty fall, acne outbreak or long hours spent in surgery, scars are something society has conditioned us to think are bad. So we conceal and we scrub and we laser, all in the hope of one day waking up without them. But in fact, they signify the exact opposite. They may heal with time and patience, but while they are present, scars tell a story of survival. Of how you pulled through even when all odds were against you and came out successfully on the other side. And while it is easier said than actually experienced, having a celebrity speak out about it can be incredibly motivating.
Last year, Selena Gomez underwent a successful kidney transplant from her friend Francia Raisa after her health battle with Lupus took a turn for the worse. Since then, the singer has candidly spoken out about her battle with depression and anxiety and championed the cause for those who suffer from the disease. A day ago, Selena was seen spending some down time down under on a yacht. She wore an orange bikini with black bottoms and the world got the first glimpse of her surgery scars on her back and inner thigh. While it did make news, a lot of it was for the right reasons.

Selena was spotted in Sydney

Her scars post the transplant
Even though she could have gone out of her way and covered up her scars, Selena chose not to and that spoke volumes. She also posted a video from the sojourn in Sydney with her friends along with the wonderful caption, "The beauty myth - an obsession with physical perfection that traps modern woman in an endless cycle of hopelessness, self consciousness, and self-hatred as she tries to fulfill society's impossible definition of flawless beauty. I chose to take care of myself because I want to, not to prove anything to anyone. Wind in her sails."
Selena's empowering message with her video
Her friend and kidney donor, Francia also posted a video with Self Magazine speaking out about the process her body went through during the surgery, how she made her decision and why she isn't afraid to show it.
Francia took the chance to speak about her scars
On first reaction, getting a scar can feel like the whole world is crumbling around you but in reality, it isn't. The world will stay intact and all you will have is an indent on your skin that shows how far you made it. There is a reason they say scars are earned and that's because they show that you fought for your place to be here. Perfection is nothing but a societal construct and we're glad celebrities like Selena and Francia and speaking out against breaking it down.
