Many associate pimple-spotted skin with turbulent teenage years when hormone production is believed to be at an all-time high. Not many realise that acne isn't a simple switch that gets turned off when one turns 20 and leaves their teens behind. More and more individuals are beginning to experience acne well into their 20s, 30s and even 40s. If you've faced your unfair share of pimples even when your youth was in the rearview mirror, take heart in the fact that you're not alone. Globally renowned celebrities face the same problems that we do; well, some of them at least.

British-French actress Emma Mackey, known best for her role of Maeve in Sex Education, recently spoke about her personal experience with adult acne and how she tackles it. In an interview with British Vogue, the 27-year-old discussed wellness and beauty in every aspect; from her exercise of choice (it's Pilates, of course) to the manicure shade she most prefers. On her troubled skin, Emma said, "I've had really bad skin for most of my twenties - really intense cystic and hormonal acne and often all at once! I stopped being a teenager and the acne carried on in adult life - I was like, what's happening?! I used all kinds of skincare, including retinol and acids, and that just made everything much worse." We can relate. Every acne-sufferer has a story to share of when their stubborn pimples led them to turn to dire solutions, which often made matters much worse.
Thankfully, Emma found what worked for her. "I try and keep my routine really pared back and exfoliate once a week. I'm lucky to go and get facials with Ada Ooi. That's obviously a huge treat but it helps to go once every couple of months, and it calms me down too. I'm trying to work on the inside as well [as the outside], and balance everything out so I don't spend too much on skincare," said the star. Ada Ooi of 001 Skincare is a London-based licensed Chinese Medicine Practitioner, acupuncturist and facialist with Hollywood celebrities, who has brought Eastern medicine to the UK.
The next time you find yourself struggling with acne like Emma, take a tip to focus on healing your insides as well as applying beauty portions on the outside. That, and rest assured that pimples may be stubborn but they definitely aren't permanent.
