Gowns are gorgeous and stilettos are stylish but if there's one item of clothing that brings elegance and style together, it's the saree. It's a celebrity favourite for award functions and starry parties but is barely ever associated with summer. That might be because it can seem to weigh one down with its numerous layers but that isn't always true. Wearing a summer styled saree is possible, all you need is the right tutor and who better than Shilpa Shetty to give a masterclass in nailing it.
In the recent past, Shilpa has grown to become a saree connoisseur of sorts. She wears the garment with her own unique twists, sexy cuts and interesting fabrics. So when the recent Asia Spa awards took place in scorching April, of course Shilpa showed up looking hella cool in a saree.
For the event, Shilpa wore a white, red and green Arpita Mehta foliage printed saree with a ruffle detail that is seen at the hem and bottom of the drape. With it, is a similar floral embroidered strapped saree blouse. For accessories, bracelets from Azotiique, a silver clutch and dangling earrings from Renu Oberoi were her clever choice to keep it minimal. She completed it with burgundy toned makeup and large curls.
Which begs the question - what's so special about Shilpa's saree this season? The answer is how appropriate it is. Florals are the flagbearer of summer prints and when combined with delightful ruffled tiers, a cutback blouse and light fabric, makes this one a grade A choice for hot summer days when traditional wear comes first without cramping down on style.
And it isn't only Shilpa. Many more B-town beauties are opting for summer-ready sarees in lightweight fabrics, sheer materials and stylish cutouts. Kangana wore a beautiful cream one with embroidered details at the hem, a cream strapped blouse and necklace this season too.
Nimrat Kaur too kept it breezy in a beige Ridhi Mehra ruffled saree and an intricately patterned blouse to match.
Patralekha chose a cream Tarun Tahiliani saree with a sequined border and colourful blouse to add a touch of summer colour.
And we can't begin to tell you how wonderful Madhuri Dixit Nene looks in this divine pink saree with a printed border and matching blouse.
Seems like Bollywood is up to speed on the summer saree trend. We can only imagine what else the season has in store for us in the ethic department.
