Stop smog from affecting your skin right away

With the country, especially the capital, being enveloped with smoke and fog, it's left us worried about plenty of basic things. Namely, how to protect our health, respiratory system and our skin during this difficult time. The pollutant filled air can embed grime within the skin and choke the pores, so here's are 5 ways to protect your skin from the smog.

1. Wear Sunscreen

'Sunscreen? In the middle of a smog storm?' is what you may think. But besides protecting your skin from the sun, a broad spectrum sunscreen shields the skin from UV rays and acts as a barrier between smog and your skin. This layer of sunscreen ensures the skin stays cocooned behind it.

2. Don't Forget Your Scarf

The fact of the matter is, no matter how much product you apply, it won't come close to an external layer protecting your skin. So when stepping out, slip on a mask or a scarf so that your hair and face is covered, only your eyes and nose are visible.

3. Exfoliate

Remember to scrub your skin twice weekly. Even if you are indoors most of the time, dirt and debris has a way of making its way to your skin and its pores. Make sure you get it all out, along with dead skin cells by exfoliating it on a regular basis.

4. Eat Up

Add plenty of Omega 3 fatty acids to your diet with oily fish, flaxseeds, walnuts and beans. Internally, Omega 3 fatty acids act like a barrier to keep moisture within the skin and irritants, out. This will work from the inside out to keep your skin healthy.

5. Moisturise

If a normal day of exposing your skin to the elements can zap it off moisture, imagine what happens when you're caught in smog. The high pollution and fog can drain the skin of its hydration so it's important to replenish it by slathering on a thick layer of moisturiser before you step outside and once you get back in too.
