January 2025 has been all about the emergence of new trends. Relationships nowadays are not limited to two people being in love as it has layers that go deeper beyond that. A new relationship dynamic has been emerging in the recent past, which is known as Living Apart Together, or LAT. This trend focuses on couples being in a relationship while living in separate homes. This is still very much the norm in many conservative communities and countries as the structure couples use when they are not married and living physically apart in their own accomodation.

As per India TV news, a new study conducted by the University of Lancaster found that the living dynamics are favourable for couples over the age of 60. As per the study, living separately at an old age makes their bond stronger. The British University noted that while quitting a marriage or getting a divorce can impact mental health, living in different dwellings while being married can help those over the age of 60.
Is LAT Helpful for Older Couples?
As per the study, leaving a marriage can have a serious impact on one's mental health. When people prefer to live in separate homes, they are not obligated to spend all of their time together but instead, opt to be in a long-term relationship outside of their spaces that adds meaning to it.
A Lancaster University professor, Yang Hu, stated "it is time we see and recognise the power of intimate, often invisible connections, beyond the home, to sustain the well-being of older adults."
Staying under the same roof with your partner can sometimes be considered a social pressure rather than being independent. As a result, LAT promotes living away that will keep with the genuine relationship decisions based on choices and closeness. This new trend has also been shown to produce a slower decrease in divorces and mental well-being.
For people who wish to maintain their personal space and their relationship boundaries, this trend might work for them.
