Thinking About Cutting Your Own Hair? You'll Want To Read This First
Don't make rash moves when cutting your hair at home

With the Coronavirus lockdown in place and salons shut for the foreseeable future, scheduling an appointment with your favourite hairstylist is a distant dream. While treatments like hair colouring, deep conditioning and perming can be put off until the quarantine is lifted, haircuts wait for no man. Locks continue to grow rapidly and if you want to get rid of split ends, have a clean finish and lighten the mop on your head, you might be tempted to take things into your own hands. Yes, that means cutting your hair by yourself. But not before you read this.

The thought is frightening but fortunately Sean Moore can help. The creative director of Menspire salon and educator at Menspire academy has taught hundreds of students the core techniques of hair dressing. Sean starts off with a disclaimer - "I don't think anyone should cut their own hair at home. But we're in strange times and many people will think about picking the clippers up themselves. Though I've been in the industry for 9 years and cut many people's hair, I've cut my own hair only once and struggled!"

His expertise dictates that it boils down to shape because one has to create it for the head. There's also a vast difference between kitchen cutters and hairstylist scissors. The build, price and way the latter is held distinguishes itself. Having clippers around the house is also ideal. When using clippers, add the highest attachment as it will take the least hair off and give more room to work around any mistakes. He also helpfully details how to correctly use the clipper. Placing it steadily on the face is often missed but very important.

"For anybody thinking of cutting their own hair, if you can ask somebody for help to clean the area around the ears and neck" adds Sean. For length, comb the section and cut minimally at the lengths.

On cutting hair at home, Sean states, "Don't expect perfection. Unless you do it multiple times, which takes a lot of trial and error to master. For the first time, you're not going to get it." For those who want to maintain their current hairstyle without chop-chopping themselves, Sean advises getting a buddy to trim the longer length around the neck and not taking your clippers right up until the head.
